Slovenian Traditional Folk Songs – There’s a clear stream and a mill

There’s a clear stream and a mill

»There’s a clear stream and a mill« is a folk song. People have sung it for many generations, and the song has been passed from grandparents to grandchildren. It gradually kept changing. The song was sung in their free time, especially in autumn when all the work on the field was finished and when they carried the grain to the mill. They sang it in winter in the evenings too, when it was cold and they were repairing tools and socialising.

It was also sung when major farm works were finished and there was some time for joy and celebration.

Ob bistrem potoku je mlin

 Ob bistrem potoku je mlin,

a jaz sem pa mlinarjev sin.

Ko mlinček ropoče in voda šumlja,

srce mi veselo igra, igra.

Če mlinček pri miru bi stal,

bi mlinar in kmet žaloval.

In otrok bi jokal in tožil glasno,

Kako je brez kruha hudo, hudo.

There’s a clear stream and a mill

 There’s a clear stream and a mill,

And I’m the miller’s son.

When the mill is rumbling and the water is trickling.

My heart is happily playing and singing.

If the mill stood still,

The miller and farmer would mourn,

And a child would cry and cry loudly,

Because being without bread is hard, hard.
